Tuition and Fee Refunds for MD Program

14510.1 Background

In compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) 12.2, students who withdraw or are dismissed from Wright State University (WSU) Boonshoft School of Medicine (BSOM) during an academic term will receive a tuition and/or fee refund based on the established institutional schedule.

14510.2 Definitions

  • "Leave of Absence" - Leave and return within the same academic term.
  • "Withdraw" - Voluntary withdraw
  • "Dismissed" - Involuntary withdraw

14510.3 Policy

Students who withdraw or are dismissed from BSOM during an academic term will receive a tuition & fee refund based on the institutional schedule. All students who separate are subjected to BSOM's tuition & fee refund schedule (14510.4). Tuition & fee refunds will be calculated based on the date that all requirements are completed to finalize the leave of absence/withdraw. Students who are approved for a leave of absence are not eligible for tuition & fee refunds.

14510.4 BSOM Tuition & Fee Refund Schedule

  • Withdraw through the 14th day of the term: 100% of Tuition, 100% of fees
  • 29-42 days of the term: 60% of Tuition, 0% of fees
  • 43-56 days of the term: 50% of Tuition, 0% of fees
  • 57-70 days of the term: 40% of Tuition, 0% of fees
  • 71-84 days of the term: 30% of Tuition, 0% of fees
  • 85-98 days of the term: 20% of Tuition, 0% of fees
  • 99 days or greater of the term: 0% of Tuition, 0% of fees

14510.5 Special Consideration

In certain other instances, including illness, full refunds or cancellations of charges may be based on professional discretion, provided that the interruption or termination of the student's program takes place prior to the start of classes. A student inducted into military service will receive a prorated refund or cancellation of charges based on his or her date of separation. The student in this situation must furnish the WSU Office of the Registrar and Office of the Bursar with a copy of the orders to active duty, showing this to be the reason for leaving BSOM.

14510.6 Financial Aid

Wright State University (WSU) is required by Federal Law (34 C.F.R. 668.21(c)) to review the enrollment activity of its Federal-aid recipients (Title IV Aid). BSOM students are considered to be a Title IV financial aid recipient if they have received Federal Direct and/or Federal Graduate PLUS loans. Students are considered to have withdrawn if they do not complete all the days in the payment period (semester) they were scheduled to complete. Title IV federal student aid recipients who establish attendance and then officially or unofficially withdraw are subject to the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Return of Title IV Funds calculation. This calculation determines the amount of federal student aid “earned” (which the student may keep) and the amount of aid considered “unearned” (which must be returned to the federal student aid programs). This often results in the student owing a balance to WSU. For more information of the Return of Title IV Funds Policy, visit the WSU Enrollment Management Financial Aid webpage.

Students will be counseled to carefully consider the above information as withdrawing/leave of absence may create a financial obligation which, if not cleared, will begin collections according to the WSU Bursar Collections schedule.

14510.7 Appeal Process

Any student who chooses to appeal the Policy must follow the process outlined below.

  1. Submit a written appeal to the BSOM Financial Aid team (som_finaid@wright.edu). The Financial Aid team in consultation with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs & Admissions will respond in writing within 14 days.
  2. If the student disagrees with the Financial Aid team's response, they may request a meeting with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs & Admissions to discuss further.
