1282.1 Policy Statement
It is the Policy of Wright State University to comply with the provisions of all applicable laws. This Policy is established to affirm certain principles related to intellectual diversity, and to prohibit certain acts, in accordance with Section 3345.0217 of the Revised Code.
1282.2 Affirmations
The University affirms each of the following:
- The University’s primary function is to practice, or support the practice, discovery, improvement,
transmission, and dissemination of knowledge and citizenship education by means of research,
teaching, discussion, and debate; - To support that function, the University shall ensure the fullest degree of intellectual diversity;
- The University ‘s faculty and staff shall allow and encourage students to reach their own
conclusions about all controversial beliefs or policies and shall not seek to indoctrinate any social,
political, or religious point of view; - The University will demonstrate intellectual diversity for course approval, approval of courses to
satisfy general education requirements, student course evaluations, common reading programs,
annual reviews, strategic goals for each department, and student learning outcomes; - The University will not endorse or oppose, as an institution, any controversial belief or policy,
except on matters that directly impact the institution's funding or mission of discovery,
improvement, and dissemination of knowledge; - The University will not encourage, discourage, require, or forbid students, faculty, or
administrators to endorse, assent to, or publicly express a given ideology, political stance, or view
of a social policy, nor will the institution require students to do any of those things to obtain an
undergraduate or post-graduate degree; - The University will not require political and ideological litmus tests in any hiring, promotion, and
admissions decisions, including diversity statements and any other requirement that applicants
describe their commitment to any ideology, principle, concept, or formulation that requires
commitment to any controversial belief or policy; - The University will not encourage, discourage, require, or forbid students, faculty, or
administrators to endorse, assent to, or publicly express a given ideology or political stance in any
hiring, promotion, or admissions process or decision; - The University will not use a diversity statement or any other assessment of an applicant's political
or ideological views in any hiring, promotions, or admissions process or decision; - The University will not encourage, discourage, require, or forbid students, faculty, or
administrators to endorse, assent to, or publicly express a given ideology or political stance in any
process or decision regulating conditions of work or study, such as committee assignments, course
scheduling, or workload adjustment policies; - The University will seek out invited speakers who have diverse ideological or political views; and
- The University will post prominently on its web site a complete list of all speaker fees, honoraria,
and other emoluments in excess of five hundred dollars for events that are sponsored by Wright
State University.
1282.3 Prohibited Acts
The following are prohibited at Wright State University:
- Any orientation or training course regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion, unless specifically exempted by the Chancellor of Higher Education;
- The continuation of existing diversity, equity, and inclusion offices or departments;
- Establishment of new diversity, equity, and inclusion offices or departments;
- Using diversity, equity, and inclusion in job descriptions;
- Contracting with consultants or third-parties whose role is or would be to promote admissions, hiring, or promotion on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression; and
- The establishment of any new institutional scholarships that use diversity, equity, and inclusion in any manner.
1282.4 Prohibited Acts; Exceptions
Exceptions for DEI-Related Orientation or Training Courses.
State law and Section 3(A) of this Policy permits the Chancellor of Higher Education to approve exemptions from the prohibition against DEI-related orientation or training courses. Authority to submit such requests to the Chancellor is reserved to the President (or their delegate).
DEI-Related Criteria in Existing Scholarships.
This Section concerns scholarships that contain DEI-related criteria, and which existed prior to the effective date of this Policy. The University shall immediately halt all new awards of the scholarship (if it has not already done so), and, to the extent possible, eliminate all prohibited criteria from the scholarship. If successful, the University may resume new awards based on the adjusted criteria. If the University is unsuccessful due to donor requirements, it may (but is not obligated to) continue awarding the scholarship based on the existing criteria, provided that no new funds are accepted for the scholarship.
This Policy does not prohibit the University from honoring guarnateed, multi-year schoalrship awards made prior to the effective date.
Participation by University Personnel in Prohibited Scholarships.
University personnel shall not participate in their official capacities in the solicitation, promotion, administration, and/or award of any scholarship that is prohibited under this Policy.
