Transfer Student Requirements for Completion of WSU Core

3240. Interim Policy

This policy was adopted under the interim policymaking provisions of the University's Policy on Policies on January 29, 2026. Information about this policy change, and any proposals for further policymaking can be accessed at the University Policy website. Students and employees may submit comments on those proposals through the Proposed Policy Change Comment Form.

3240.1 Coursework Completed from a Previous Institution Prior to Matriculation at Wright State

A student who has completed the entirety of the Ohio's Transfer 36 (OT36) requirements at an Ohio public institution or has been considered as having completed the equivalent to Wright State University's Core Curriculum for Elements A-E (see Policy No. 4130) and has completed the equivalent of 36 semester hours at the time of transfer will be deemed to have completed the Wright State Core, including inclusive excellence, global inquiry (see Policy No. 4250), integrated writing (see Policy No. 4245), and first-year seminar.

An OT36-approved course does not need to be equivalent to a Wright State Core course to be applicable to Elements A-E or Inclusive Excellence. Students who have been deemed to have completed the Wright State Core are still responsible for completing any courses required for their major, minor, or certificates.

General Education courses from a college or university that does not participate in Ohio Transfer 36 may also be counted towards the completion of Wright State Core requirements, provided that at least one of the following have been met:

  1. The course is equivalent to a Wright State Core course (to be determined by faculty members teaching the subject matter).
  2. The course meets both of the following conditions
    • The course is included in the institution's General Education Requirements in a comparable manner.
    • The learning objectives align closely with an element or attribute of the Wright State Core.

Such course equivalencies will be applied toward Wright State's Core requirements on a course-by-course basis.

3240.2 Courses Completed Subsequent to Matriculation at Wright State

To be applicable to a Wright State Core requirement, a transfer course completed subsequent to matriculation at Wright State must meet the same criteria aforementioned in 3240.1, and the student should consult with their academic advisor prior to registering for the course at another institution.

3240.3 First Year Seminar Requirement in Wright State Core

All students will be expected to satisfy the First-Year seminar requirement by a Wright State University or equivalent transfer course, except for transfer students with a minimum of 24 semester hours of transfer credit that were completed in any terms following the summer term after high school graduation or the equivalent. Students granted exemptions from taking the First Year Seminar will be required to make up those additional credit hours from the Wright State Core coursework. Students who have completed the entire Wright State Core through coursework completed before matriculating at Wright State University may complete the additional credits with other advisor-approved coursework.

3240.4 Inclusive Excellence (IE) Courses in the Wright State Core

A student who has completed the equivalent of 75% of Wright State University's Core Curriculum (more than 27 semester hours) will be considered as having met the Inclusive Excellence (IE) requirements.

Students who have completed the equivalent of between 50%-75% (between 19 and 26.9 semester hours) of the Wright State Core when they matriculate at Wright State must complete one Inclusive Excellence course in the Wright State Core.

Students who have completed the equivalent of less than 50% (18 or fewer semester hours) of the Wright State Core when they matriculate must complete two Inclusive Excellence courses within the Wright State Core.

Transfer courses that have been designated at OT36 approved Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion courses will fulfill the Inclusive Excellence attribute at Wright State University.

3240.5 Global Inquiry (GI) Courses in the Wright State Core

A student who has completed the equivalent of 75% of Wright State University's Core Curriculum (more than 27 semester hours) will be considered as having met the Global Inquiry (GI) requirement.

A student who has completed any course considered an equivalent of a Wright State Core course with the Global Inquiry attribute will have been deemed to have fulfilled the GI attribute through that transfer course. Students who are required to fulfill the GI attribute also have the option of enrolling in select upper-level Humanities or Social Science courses that substantially cover global and/or regional studies. Study abroad courses will also be considered as fulfilling the GI attribute in Wright State Core.

3240.6 History Course Requirements in the Wright State Core

Students who have not yet fulfilled the Element C, Arts and Humanities, requirements of the Wright State Core through prior transfer credit must take at least one OT36-approved History course. A student who has completed an OT36 approved History course at another institution, or a college-level History course whose Learning Objectives are at least 70% aligned with Wright State University History course learning outcomes, as determined by Wright State History faculty, will be deemed as having fulfilled the History component of Element C, Arts and Humanities, in the Wright State Core.

3240.7 Integrated Writing (IW) Courses in the Wright State Core

All students will be expected to satisfy three Integrated Writing (IW) courses in total in the Wright State Core and Major, including 1-2 courses in their Major. Students should consult with their advisor for information on the required distribution of IW courses required for their program. Any additional upper-level IW course completed in the Major beyond the two used to meet the major requirement may be used to complete the IW requirement in the Wright State Core.

A student who has completed the entirety of the Ohio Transfer 36 from another Ohio public postsecondary institution will be considered as having met the Integrated Writing requirement in the Wright State Core.

Students who have not completed the entirety of the Ohio Transfer 36 but who have completed the equivalent of the Wright State Core when they matriculate at Wright State will be considered as having met the Integrated Writing requirement.

Students who have completed the equivalent of 75% or more of the Wright State Core may satisfy the IW requirement by completing at least one IW course in the Wright State Core by preparing an acceptable portfolio that includes writing on demand, or by completing an approved advanced writing course.

Students who have completed the equivalent of 50-75% (19-26.9 semester hours) of the Wright State Core when they matriculate must complete one IW course within the Wright State Core.

Students who have completed the equivalent of less than 50% (18 or fewer semester hours) of the Wright State Core when they matriculate at Wright State must complete at least one (or 2, depending on program) IW course in the Wright State Core. Academic advisors will provide guidance on these requirements.
