Categories of Admission

Students who on the basis of their academic records are considered to be fully qualified to pursue a graduate degree are admitted into this category.

Admission to regular status for master's degree programs requires an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7 (based on a 4.0 system) or an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5, but with a 3.0, or better for the last 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours earned toward the undergraduate degree.  If an applicant to a master's degree program has previously completed 12 quarter or 9 semester credit hours at the graduate level, then the overall graduate grade point average must be at least 3.0.

Admission to regular status for doctoral degree programs requires an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7 (based on a 4.0 system).  If an applicant to a doctoral degree program has previously completed 12 quarter or 9 semester credit hours at the graduate level, then the overall graduate grade point average must be at least 3.25.

Admission to regular status also requires approval by the degree program.

Students who have grade point average criterion less than those required for regular status (see UP# 5010.1) and/or need to complete prerequisite coursework may be admitted in conditional status. Conditionally admitted students normally must achieve a 3.0 cumulative graduate grade point average the term in which they complete nine or more semester hours since being admitted in this status.  Students who have achieved the 3.0 grade point requirement, have completed prerequisite courses, and have completed all other stipulated conditions will automatically be granted regular degree status.  Graduate credit earned while in this status will apply toward degree requirements.  Students in this category who do not meet the 3.0 grade point average requirement within the required time period will be subject to dismissal from the College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies.  Masters degree students subject to dismissal under this policy may petition subject to the rules and procedures found in UP# 5510.  Post-masters and doctoral students subject to dismissal from Conditional status may petition to their graduate program via the College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies.   Conditions of admission specific to international students who do not meet minimum criteria for English language proficiency are described in UP# 5070.3.

Students may be admitted provisionally for one term only pending receipt of academic transcripts, test scores, etc.  If admission requirements are not met during the term of provisional admission, a hold may be placed on the students' academic records; registration for future terms may be denied; all graduate credit earned while in provisional status may be changed to undergraduate credit; and students may be immediately dismissed from the College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies.

Students who wish to enter the College of Education and Human Services' Licensure Program are admitted into this status.  The Licensure program allows students the opportunity to meet and consult with Licensure advisors and have the College's recommendation and assistance in applying for State of Ohio Licensure.  A student cannot be awarded a degree while in this status.  Furthermore, subject to subsequent admission into a degree program and program approval, a maximum of one-half (50%) of the graduate hours required for completion of degree requirements may consist of applicable graduate courses completed in Licensure status (see UP# 5320).  Students in this status must have a 3.0 cumulative graduate grade point average the semester in which they complete nine semester hours of graduate credit.  Failure to meet this requirement would result in their dismissal from the College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies.

Licensure status requires an undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or better and at least a 3.0 for any previously completed graduate work.

Students who desire to take graduate courses but do not wish to pursue a degree program are admitted into this status.  Admission into this status does not imply or guarantee subsequent admission into a degree program.  Students must apply and meet the admission requirements for degree status.  Should students be admitted into degree status at a later date, a maximum of one-half (50%) of the graduate hours required for completion of degree requirements may consist of applicable graduate courses completed in non-degree status (see UP# 5320).  Students in this status must have a 3.0 cumulative graduate grade point average the semester in which they complete nine semester hours of graduate credit.  Failure to meet this grade point average requirement will result in dismissal from the College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies. Students in non-degree status who take courses in the College of Education and Human Services for the purpose of updating or renewing teacher Licensure requirements will not have the same privileges provided by the College as if in Licensure status.

Non-degree status requires an undergraduate or graduate degree.  There is no undergraduate grade point average requirement for admission into this status; however, all previous graduate work must be a 3.0 or better.

Students desiring to take only workshop courses for graduate credit may do so under this status.  Students are granted special status without being admitted to the College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies. Students applying for this status must possess a baccalaureate degree.  Permission to register for workshops is granted upon presentation of the special application form to the Office of the Registrar.  Should students be accepted into degree status at a later date, a maximum of twelve hours of graduate workshop credit may be applied with program approval toward degree requirements

Domestic or international students actively pursuing graduate programs at other colleges or universities who wish to earn credits for transfer to those institutions may be granted transient status.  Students must present to the College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies a completed "Permission for Transient Status" (PDF) form or a letter signed by the graduate school dean or Registrar at their universities stating that the applicant is actively pursuing a graduate degree.  The form should be certified with the institutional or graduate school seal.  If a transient student does not attend Wright State as a graduate student for three consecutive semesters, a new form or letter will be required for readmission into transient status.

Domestic or international students from partner institutions with which Wright State has previously arranged partnerships may apply for Transitional graduate status.  Transitional graduate students must apply to a program for which a partnership agreement & pathway already exists, and must meet all other minimum criteria for admission (including English language and GPA standards), save only that they have not yet completed the bachelor’s degree.  Students admitted to Transitional status cannot complete any graduate degree program or be awarded a graduate degree at Wright State while in that status.  Only 15 credit hours of graduate work taken in Transitional status can be applied to a graduate degree at Wright State; students in this status are expected to complete their bachelor’s degree by the end of those 15 hours. Regular graduate status will be conferred on Transitional students in good standing upon receipt of a transcript showing proof of a bachelor’s degree.

Students seeking a graduate certificate outside of a graduate degree program are admitted into this status.  Students admitted to certificate status must hold at least a bachelor’s degree and must meet any additional criteria set forth by the certificate program to which they are applying.  Students in this status must have a 3.0 cumulative graduate grade point average the semester in which they complete nine semester hours of graduate credit.  Failure to meet this grade point average requirement will result in dismissal from the College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies.  Should students be admitted into degree status at a later date, a maximum of one-half (50%) of the graduate hours required for completion of degree requirements may consist of applicable graduate courses completed in certificate status
