Non-Faculty Instructors

14010.1 Purpose

At Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine (BSOM), medical student teaching is a highly valued activity. In addition, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Element 9.1 required that "residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other non-faculty instructors in the medical education program who supervise or teach medical students are familiar with the learning objectives of the course or clerkships and are prepared for their roles in teaching and assessment."

14010.2 Policy

All residents, fellows, graduate students, advanced standing medical students, and other non-faculty instructors that supervise instruct, or assess BSOM medical students are required to be provided the learning objectives for the module, clerkship, or elective prior to beginning their duties. Additionally, these individuals must receive appropriate training in order to prepare them for their roles and responsibilities.

Expectations for these activities include:

  • Receiving a copy of the module/clerkship/elective objectives and any required clinical experiences.
  • Clear guidance from the module/clerkship/elective director about their role in teaching and assessing medical students.
  • BSOM and/or its relevant department providing resources (e.g., workshops, resource materials) to enhance the teaching and assessment skills

Documentation confirming all residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other non-faculty instructors involved in the supervision, instruction, and/or assessment of medical students received training will be reviewed annually by the Faculty Curriculum Committee.
